Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica was detected by targeting invasion A (InvA) gene using genesig® Standard Kit (Primerdesign Ltd., UK).

The confirmation of suspected colonies was carried out at the genus level using a real-time PCR kit (Salmonella_invA-EASY genesig® Kit; PrimerDesign Ltd., Eastleigh, UK), which detects the invasion protein (InvA) gene of S. enterica.

Two consecutive fecal checks showed no signs of gastrointestinal parasites and fecal PCR tests (Genesig q16 PCR Easy Kit Salmonella and Campylobacter, Primerdesign Ltd., Camberley, UK) for salmonella and campylobacter were negative.

Standards, primers and probes were obtained from commercially available kits (Genesig, Primerdesign Ltd., UK). Bacterial targets specific for E. coli, Salmonella spp., Campylobacter jejuni, Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus faecalis, Vibrio spp. and Shigella spp. were selected (Table S2). A TaqMan-based (hydrolysis probes) qPCR was undertaken with the Oasig q-PCR Master Mix (Primerdesign Ltd., UK), according to the manufacturer's instructions on three replicate samples.

Real time PCR amplification for Salmonella spp. detection was performed with the commercial kit All pathogenic Salmonella species genesig® Advanced Kit (PrimerDesign TM Ltd., Camberley, UK), which uses a Taqman® probe read in FAM channel.
